Charles Dobzynski
A French poet, novelist, translator and critic of Polish origin (1929–2014), Charles Dobzynski was editor-in-chief of the magazine Europe. Yiddish, his mother tongue, ran through a body of work shaped by Jewish memory and exile. He compiled Le Miroir d'un peuple. Anthologie de la poésie yiddish (The Mirror of a People: An Anthology of Yiddish Poetry; Gallimard, Poésie series) and published Le Monde yiddish. Littérature, chanson, arts plastiques, cinéma (The Yiddish World: Literature, Song, Visual Arts, Cinema; L'Harmattan, 1998). In 2005 he received the Goncourt poetry prize for his life's work.
