Pierre Pachet

A French writer and essayist (1937–2016), Pierre Pachet taught literature at the Université Paris-Diderot and contributed to La Quinzaine littéraire for forty years. Across some twenty books, he sketched a literary anthropology of the democratic individual. A thinker of dissidence and a close associate of Claude Lefort, he was the author of, among others, Le Premier Venu. Essai sur la politique baudelairienne (The First Comer: An Essay on Baudelaire's Politics) (Denoël, 1976), Autobiographie de mon père (Autobiography of My Father) (Belin, 1987), Conversations à Jassy (Conversations in Iași) (Maurice Nadeau, 1997), and Les Baromètres de l'âme (The Barometers of the Soul) (Hatier, 1990).
