Michael Löwy

A Franco-Brazilian sociologist and philosopher born in São Paulo in 1938, Michael Löwy is research director emeritus at the CNRS and teaches at the EHESS. Awarded the CNRS Silver Medal (1985) and the European Walter Benjamin Prize (2020), he has devoted his work to revolutionary Romanticism, liberation theology, and ecosocialism. His publications include Rédemption et utopie (Redemption and Utopia: Jewish Libertarian Thought in Central Europe; PUF, 1988), Walter Benjamin. Avertissement d'incendie (Fire Alarm: Reading Walter Benjamin's "On the Concept of History"; PUF, 2001), La Cage d'acier. Max Weber et le marxisme wébérien (The Iron Cage: Max Weber and Weberian Marxism; Stock, 2013), and La Comète incandescente (The Incandescent Comet; L'Éclat, 2020).
