Albert Memmi
A Franco-Tunisian writer and essayist (1920–2020), Albert Memmi was one of the major thinkers of colonization and of Mediterranean Judaism. A former researcher at the CNRS and chair of the social-sciences department at the Université Paris-Nanterre, he is the author of, among others, La Statue de sel (The Pillar of Salt; Gallimard, 1953, with a preface by Albert Camus), Portrait du colonisé (The Colonizer and the Colonized; preface by Sartre, 1957), Portrait d'un juif (Portrait of a Jew; Gallimard, 1962), La Libération du juif (The Liberation of the Jew; Gallimard, 1966) and Le Racisme (Racism; Gallimard, 1982).
